Sumitomo Rubber and Osaka University collaborate on research!
Innovative Technology Aims for Radical Cure of Cancer
July 19, 2024 - Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (President: Satoru Yamamoto) and a research group led by Professor Hirofumi Yamamoto of Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine announced today that they will promote joint research aimed at developing new treatments for cancer. The research aims to clarify the mechanism of activation of cancer cells by utilizing a "cancer cell adsorption kit" that uses a special polymer developed by Sumitomo Rubber.

Challenges in Cancer Treatment and Sumitomo Rubber's Efforts
In recent years, many people around the world have been battling cancer, and the establishment of new treatment technologies has become a major social issue. Sumitomo Rubber has been working for many years to contribute to solving this issue through research and development utilizing its proprietary polymer technology.

Cancer cell adsorption kit" using a special polymer
The "Cancer Cell Adsorption Kit" used in this joint research is a revolutionary technology that can adsorb only specific cancer cells in blood by using a special polymer developed by Sumitomo Rubber. With conventional centrifugal separation methods, it was difficult to completely separate cancer cells from blood cells, limiting the selection of more precise treatment methods. However, this kit will make it possible to collect more and more high-precision data, which is expected to lead to dramatic advances in cancer treatment.
Purpose and Expected Results of the Joint Research
The objective of this joint research is to clarify the mechanism of activation of cancer cells using the "Cancer Cell Adsorption Kit. Specifically, the following results are expected
Elucidation of the mechanisms that promote cancer cell proliferation and metastasis
Administration of molecular-targeted therapies to more patients
Expansion of possibilities for new drug development
Acceleration of research for future radical cure of cancer

Collaboration with the "Moonshot Project
Prof. Hirofumi Yamamoto and his colleagues are advancing the "Moonshot Plan," which aims for the future radical cure of cancer. This joint research will accelerate the realization of more effective cancer treatment in collaboration with this plan.
Sumitomo Rubber's "Our Philosophy
Sumitomo Rubber is committed to the "Purpose" set forth in "Our Philosophy," our corporate philosophy system: "Creating the highest level of security and joy through innovation that opens the way to the future. By promoting research on advanced cancer treatment methods, Sumitomo Rubber aims to contribute to the further development of medical technology toward a future in which cancer can be cured.
